There’s been lots of chat over lockdown about how this situation has affected the mental health of our young people and what, if any, the long term effects will be.

It seems already as if our young people are proving something that many people forgot over all these conversations. When we’re young our brain is exceptionally adaptable to change. The teenage brain is kind of bouncy.

Many of the mental health challenges we have seen in the young people we have helped over this last 17 months have been COVID amplified rather than COVID caused. Us adults got our knickers in a right twist projecting out our difficulties in adapting to this new normal on to our teenagers when, in reality, the teenage brain is designed to cope with change. It’s plastic and moveable and adapts to these new situations quickly. It might not like them, but it knows how to cope with them!

What affected our teenagers was the lack of distraction, intense boredom, and the false social situation of being around their parents 24/7 all of a sudden! There was no escape and that meant many existing issues such as anxiety, low mood, worries and fears, were put into sharp focus with no ‘pressure release’.

As the world returns (in the UK at least) to some sort of normality look about yourself and notice what you see. Groups of teenagers are smiling, laughing and connecting again. They are bouncing back.

Young people’s mental health and access to good, effective mental health services is still a huge issue but I think we adults should be looking to our young people as an inspiration. They are showing us the way.

When it comes to mental health many of our young people are resilient, open, willing to accept help and ready to change. And they are bouncing back because of it. Let’s hope the adults take a leaf out of their book as the world gets back on its feet.

Many people avoid helping their friends with their mental health because they’re scared they won’t say the right thing and, even worse, might say the wrong thing.

I get it. We think we’re being asked to be a therapist and solve all the problems. When we’re not. We’re being asked to be a friend.
👂
Genuinely, the best thing you can do for someone who opens up to you about their mental health is just listen. I promise the mark of a great therapist is the ability to listen. Not a million solutions for every problem that exists.

When you’re in your own head worrying about you and what you should be doing, you’re in the wrong place. ❌
👂
If a friend trusts you enough to open up and be vulnerable then just support them. Listen. Care. Say ‘I hear you, I care for you, I’m hear to support you’ and let them keep talking. ✅
👂
A wise woman once said to me ‘I don’t need a therapist, I need a husband’ and it was a transformative moment in our relationship. It taught me how important it was that I listen first, support second, and try and solve somewhere near the end of the queue.

Stop trying to be what you’re not and be what you’re best at. Be a friend.

Many health systems, the Americans in particular,

Many health systems, the Americans in particular, keep turning mental health into a medical issue when it never, never is. Never.

This brings with it two issues.
🤯
Firstly, due to our ever increasing intake of Americanised information, especially by our young people, we are at risk of a whole generation unconsciously absorbing this misinformation. They treat it as true. And therefore they don’t realise that everything they are feeling, all the mental health problems they face, can be taken away. Mental health is not normal life. You don’t have to live with mental health problems. But we teach people they do.

Secondly, when we treat people like they are broken they will begin to believe it is true. As soon as we believe it’s true we’ll start acting like it’s true. That’s when it gets scary.

We already see this happening with young people. Many young people are taught by older people that nothing can be done for their mental health. But that’s bollocks. [Almost] every mental health problem is fixable.
🤯
We can’t avoid our minds giving us anxiety, depression and lots of other horrible feelings. They’re a natural result of living. But if we continually educate and challenge the medicalisation of mental health we can turn a worrying tide. We can create a future where mental health is always seen as fixable. And when we do that, people are no longer scared to ask for help because people are no longer worried they’ll be told they’re broken.

They’ll just know they’re human.

PS I have to clarify I am not anti mental health meds. But they aren’t a cure. Therapy, specifically good therapy, is the cure. We know. We do good therapy.

For centuries fire has been used as a cleaning tool, a sign of rebirth or an energy to ideas and dreams. I think we did all 3 this evening.

I’ve no idea why or when my wife bought me this wee picture but it has had pride of place in all my offices ever since she first gave me it.

It’s such a simple message, one that many of us forget and I reckon the addition of a sheep based pun makes it extra special.

The knowledge that we are loved is a fundamental part of our self esteem. From an early age our psyche requires attachment and the knowledge that someone actually gives a sh🤬t about us. But it doesn’t end in childhood. It’s important throughout our lives.

Yet many of us like to pretend it’s not actually happening. We’re so scared of what it would be like to lose love, we never allow ourselves to let go into the warmth and comfort of feeling it. We push it away, deny it, hold it at arms length to save ourselves the pain of losing something we won’t let ourselves have in case we lose it.

Quite frankly, it’s bonkers. Today, wherever you are and whoever you are, know that someone, me!, gives a sh💩t about where you are and who you are.

Turned my car into a jungle today, looked awesome. One of the less important casualties of COVID was the HeadStrong plants 🌱 [>>>swipe to see the sorry state of our old Yucca]. Today was the day to start reintroducing the green back.

What a wee joy that was! Dunno how many people closed their eyes but I hope if you were there you enjoyed it.

I’m always a sucker for a video like this. It’s such a perfect example of how mastery takes pain, struggle, resilience and effort.

When you watch an expert do what they do they often make it look effortless. Sometimes we even look at other people just living and think it looks effortless 😂!! But anything worth doing takes effort.

Behind every expert, every success and every victory is hard work and dedication to get there. Bumps, falls, failures, setbacks. The difference between an expert and everyone else? They got back up and did it again.

This video is professional mountain biker @mattjonesmtb practising to nail a trick that looks ridiculously difficult and, although the end truck is hugely impressive, I’m more impressed by how many times he got back up and went again.
